What is the Broadway List? (& Writing Black Day)

A few years ago Bob Fischbach from the Omaha World Herald asked me, “When did Marcus become interested in Broadway?” It was a tricky question to answer, because it feels like Marcus and Broadway have been synonymous for, well…always. Certainly he’s always loved and been a performer. He is attracted to a microphone like a magnet and if there is a free stage, he finds his way on it.

But we nailed it down to the first show he saw in NYC, The Lion King. There was plenty of theatre before that, but this was - BROADWAY.

Times Square and theatre fuel Marcus’ busy brain like nothing else. He absorbs and reflects the energy and passion.

When Marcus is one of a group of many, it’s hard for him to be heard and share his ideas. When he and I travel alone, especially on a theatre trip, he shares constantly; we chat together non-stop. In fact, this last trip I marveled internally at how much he had to say in every conversation, never at a loss for words.

Amy and the Orphans, currently running off-Broadway, rocked my world.

But I’m not the only one talking about it, not even close! Check out all this press!

 New York Times Article:

Near the end of 2015, the playwright Lindsey Ferrentino and the actress Jamie Brewer were watching clips of Donald J. Trump, then a candidate, appearing to mock a reporter with a physical disability. They were horrified — which made their work on a new play, centered on a character with Down syndrome, all the more

Marcus and I have been to NYC twice in about 6 weeks to see Broadway shows. We saw The Band’s Visit, School of Rock, Frozen, and Amy and the Orphans. Amy and the Orphans we saw twice.

Each one touched my heart. Yes, even School of Rock, which pleasantly surprised me. The Band’s Visit rolled along in a compelling, slow-build. I felt like I spent the first half with my head tilted, a

It’s Sunday. The day I write and the day I cook. I aggressively try to protect these two rituals.

To me: Food is love. Food is survival. Food is creative art. Food is budgeted. Food is reward. Food is comfort. Food is control.

I plan menus with care, choose foods that nourish, fill, and treat. Over the years Quinn’s dietary needs, restrictions, and requests have changed widely, and expanded my cooking knowledge and range. My food restrictions have changed too. Marcus’ tastes have expanded rather than

us10 years ago, I was the customer service and marketing manager in the family print shop and Quinn and I celebrated our 10-year wedding anniversary with a delightful party at the Joslyn Art Museum and I wore a fabulous dress. I celebrated a breakthrough in my health and was in the few “perfect weight” years of my life. (Well, to be honest, I had one singular year of perfectly healthy weight. Ah well…but this post isn’t about my body

SO, like everyone I know, I’ve got a lot on my mind today. There are many words I hoped to put on paper today, in some fabulous order that would change the world, or at the very least entertain, educate, or inspire.  Instead, I’m too full.  My brain is too busy.  It happens.

Time’s Up (and Down Syndrome)

What I wanted to know for just five minutes on June 21st is what I should be trying to say now. Breathe. Embrace. Capture. Laughter. A love like you’ve never known will hold you for the rest of your days. Many people live their whole lives not knowing why they were born, June 21st 1990 was a blur but it was only one day after you found your purpose. It was the day after you found out your beautiful son was born with Down syndrome.
